My friend had a baby yesterday. I went to visit her today, and the new baby. He was three WHOLE POUNDS heavier than Noah at birth but he had that unmistakable baby smell that makes a uterus twitch and an ovary ovulate. It was a very precious moment, sitting in a hospital room, with my friend, her swaddled little burrito in my arms, asleep. Quiet. It was really just a little over a year ago that that was me and Noah.
Noah's play dates are usually with older kids. Older by about six or seven months, which at 13 months of age, that's a huge difference. Because of this, we tend to refer to him as Baby Noah. On the way to the hospital today I explained that were going to see my friend's baby and that he wasn't the baby anymore. It was a sweet moment that was soon to be whoppingly trumped as I sat on the blue vinyl "couch" holding a baby who is about 35 hours old and sitting next to me climbing on me was Noah. He had removed his shoe, was chewing on it intermittently, standing up trying to pull things off the window ledge, chewing on my keys and throwing them at me, refusing the pretzels and crackers and juice I brought specifically to pacify him and being a general pain in my ass.
Right there in room 4206 I realized that Noah is not a baby anymore. He looks like a toddler. He toddles like a toddler. He talks to me, sort of, he goes down steps, and he has entertained himself for the last 45 minutes with my car keys. This is making me feel a little behind the parenting curve because I thought I was still working with a baby. I think reality is working a little faster than my head is on this one.
I call time out, okay?
He looks like a baby to me! (A super-cute one at that!)

You know, we call him Baby Noah, too. He's younger than Nemo, that makes him a baby. We have 6 baby einstein DVDs that Sunny has finally agreed to give to Baby Noah. Though, really, we still call Nemo the baby. They're always your babies.

Just wait until he says whatever and rolls his eyes at you. At 3.5.
